Addiction Medicine Elective Opportunities for Family Medicine Residents

The assessment and management of substance use disorders and associated diseases and co-morbidities in a community based setting. While all classifications of substances of abuse are present (depressants such as opiates, alcohol, benzodiazepines and stimulants such as cocaine and amphetamines) emphasis will be placed on harm reduction and opiate agonist treatment. Residents will be exposed to the management of opioid use disorders during pregnancy and to counseling with onsite therapists.

The Resident will work with different Physicians each day, depending on who is staffing the clinic. There are 2 clinic sites.

There are currently 6 Physicians on site:

  • Dr. Robert McKay
  • Dr. David Bridgeo
  • Dr. Yasmin Keshavjee
  • Dr. Jennifer Jaco
  • Dr. Donald Levy
  • Dr. Ishan Gupta

Monday through Friday  - The Resident would be seeing patients in the clinic. The clinic accepts new patients continually, therefore there is a potential of evaluating 2-4+ new patients/week with follow-up of those patients during the month's rotation.

Thursday mornings: The VON pain clinic reviews cases with Dr. McKay.

2 Fridays/month - There is a harm reduction clinic in the afternoons.

By the end of this elective Residents have the potential to be comfortable prescribing and managing patients on suboxone and should have a good understanding of methadone maintenance

Main Preceptor:

Dr. Yasmin Keshavjee, MD CCFP
